Denis Istomin vs Florian Mayer Tennis Prediction
Denis Istomin stunned the local favorite and former finalist Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets to advance into the second round of ATP Stuttgart for the first time in his career (R1 exit in 2016), 7-6 7-6. He will face yet another German, Florian Mayer, in the second round.
It was a much-needed win for the Uzbek as he was going through an eight-match losing run on tour before entering ATP Stuttgart. His terrible form is largely down to the poor fitness, having retired six times in the last 18 months, including once at Brisbane this season (left hip).
The win against Philipp Kohlschreiber was also Denis Istomin’s first win on grass since defeating Nicolas Almagro in the second round of Wimbledon 2016. He played four matches on this surface in 2017 and ended up losing all four (0/4).
Florian Mayer ended his four-match losing run by scoring a comfortable straight set win over compatriot Yannick Maden in the first round of ATP Stuttgart, 6-4 6-1, thanks to his experience and his opponent’s lack of experience on this surface.
The German has played four round of 16 matches here at Stuttgart in the past and managed to win three of them (3/1), with the only loss coming against Federico Delbonis in 2013. However, he could win only one match on grass in 2017 (1/4) and will be hoping to do better this time around.
Denis Istomin leads the H2H 3-0, but this will be their first meeting on grass. Both Istomin and Mayer have got the game to do well in these conditions, and despite their poor form, it’s a great chance for them to make a rare quarterfinal appearance in 2018.
