Mikhail Kukushkin vs Mischa Zverev Tennis Prediction
Mikhail Kukushkin continued his excellent form at ATP Eastbourne this week by securing an impressive comeback win against the British #1 and crowd favorite Kyle Edmund in the quarterfinal, 5-7 6-3 6-1.
This is easily Mikhail Kukushkin’s best week of the season. He was winless in three matches and short of confidence before entering ATP Eastbourne but has managed to register two dominant wins against Alex De Minaur (6-1 6-2) and David Ferrer (6-2 6-0) in the first round and round of 16, respectively.
The Kazakh #1, who lost his previous two quarterfinal matches in 2018 (Pune and Lyon), will now make his first semifinal appearance on tour since losing to Nikoloz Basilashvili in the semifinal of ATP Memphis in 2017. He has played six semifinal matches on tour so far in his career and managed to win three of them.
This is Mikhail Kukushkin’s best result at ATP Eastbourne as well as in any grass tournament. In fact, he has never won more than two matches on grass in a season (2018 w/l on grass – 3/1).
Mischa Zverev comfortably dispatched the talented Canadian teenager, Denis Shapovalov, in straight sets to secure his semifinal berth at ATP Eastbourne. Five of the seven sets he has played this week finished at 6-3.
The 30-year-old Mischa Zverev, who made a terrible start to the season including receiving a hefty fine at the Australian Open, will make his first semifinal appearance of the season on Friday. He played three semifinal matches on tour in 2017 but ended up losing two of them.
The veteran German has so far won 51 matches on grass in his career (51/40), and his best result on this surface was winning the title at Dublin Challenger in 2006 and reaching the semifinal at ATP Stuttgart last season.
Mischa Zverev leads the H2H 3-2 including winning their only previous meeting on grass (Wimbledon 2017). The German is the better player on grass and will head into this clash as the favorite, but Kukushkin can be a difficult player to play against when he is on a winning run.
Tennis Prediction: Mischa Zverev
