Yulia Putintseva vs Madison Keys Tennis Prediction
Madison Keys blasts slam second-week debutante Mihaela Buzarnescu in 65 minutes to book her first French Open quarterfinal (6-1 6-4). The American won 82% behind her first serve and struck an equal number of winners and unforced errors (17).
Keys become the 13th active player to reach the quarterfinal of every slam. In the last 12 months, she has gone 15-3 at majors, including a final at US Open and a quarterfinal at Australian Open. In contrast, she is 10-9 in tour events in the same period.
This is the 13th seed’s fifth slam quarterfinal of her career (2-2). Keys is the finalist of two clay events, 2015 Charleston and 2016 Rome, but she arrived at Paris having lost the first rounds of Stuttgart and Madrid, and pulling out of Rome (rib injury).
Keys is the only quarterfinalist in the bottom-half of the draw to not have dropped a set so far this fortnight. Enroute to the last eight, she met a couple of fellow Americans, Caroline Dolehide and Sachia Vickery, and Indian Wells champion Naomi Osaka.
Yulia Putintseva is back into the French Open quarterfinal with a straight-set win over 26th seed Barbora Strycova in the fourth round (6-4 6-3). The Kazakh was more successful on her second serve (won 76%) than on her first (55%).
Putintseva, ranked #98, is the only unseeded quarterfinalist this fortnight. She arrived at Paris without having won back-to-back tour-level matches since the Taipei quarterfinal. In fact, she has not won so many matches in a row since 2017 St. Petersburg final.
The former #27 started the campaign by defeating 22nd seed and former world #4 Johanna Konta in the first round. In the third round, she saved two match points and came back from a set and double break deficit to defeat Qiang Wang.
Putintseva’s only previous slam quarterfinal came at the French Open in 2016. She reached the last eight stage by defeating Andrea Petkovic and Carla Suarez Navarro, and even took a set off Serena Williams, before falling to her eventually.
Keys is the clear favorite going into this match. However, the head-to-head is in entirely Putintseva’s favor. The Kazakh has gone 2-0 against the American during the Junior days as well as defeated her in their only tour-level meeting, 2016 Tokyo.
