Ricardas Berankis vs Mackenzie McDonald
Playing his first grass tournament of the season at ATP Antalya last week, Ricardas Berankis defeated Evgeny Donskoy in the first round but lost to the eventual runner-up Adrian Mannarino in the second round.
The Lithuanian lost his first-round match at the season’s previous two grand slams, against Stan Wawrinka in the Australian Open and Alexander Zverev in the French Open. However, having got a relatively comfortable first-round opponent at Wimbledon this fortnight (Mackenzie McDonald), he will be hoping for a better result.
Mackenzie McDonald, who won six matches on grass in 2017, needs two more wins to equal his tally. He has won four matches from three grass tournaments over the last few weeks (4/3), including a quarterfinal appearance at ATP Hertogenbosch.
The American recorded his career-best performance at the Australian Open earlier this season, where he won four matches as a qualifier before threatening the world #6 Grigor Dimitrov during the five-set defeat.
These two players met once in the qualifying rounds of the US Open in 2014 when Ricardas Berankis secured a comfortable straight set win. Mackenzie McDonald and Ricardas Berankis will be content with the draw as both will see this as a winnable match. That said, McDonald has done well on grass this year and will head into this clash as the slight favorite.
