Dominic Thiem, 26, 3rd place ATP, will donate his first participation in the “Adria Tour”, in which several participants, including the organizer Novak Djokovic, were tested positive for coronavirus. The decision of the Austrian tennis player was announced by Wolfgang Thiem, the player’s father and coach, according to Agerpres.
In an interview for the daily “Presse”, Wolfgang Thiem indicated that his son will donate the participation bonus to an association, without specifying what the amount is or the name of the beneficiary.
Dominic Thiem won the Belgrade tournament, the first of the Adria Tour, which was later suspended at the end of the tournament in Zadar, Croatia, due to the infection of Bulgarian player Grigor Dimitrov, followed by other positive cases such as Novak Djokovic, Grigor Dimitrov, Viktor Troicki, Borna Coric, Dimitrov’s coach and Djokovic’s coach, Goran Ivanisevic.
“Of course, going to a nightclub was not a good idea, but Djokovic didn’t do anything wrong. I prefer to see a few more cases of coronavirus, but thousands of euros raised to go to a clinic for children with cancer, “said Thiem’s father.
“Adria Tour” was organized by Novak Djokovic in order to raise funds for hospitals, but the players allowed themselves a relaxed attitude, without respecting the basic safety rules.
In early July, Novak Djokovic made a donation of more than 40,000 euros to the southeastern city of Novi Pazar to help him cope with a growing number of cases of infection with the new coronavirus.
